Project Meraki - an art fundraiser for our oceans

Project Meraki is an art fundraiser by Stephanie Loy to support the conservation projects of the Large Marine Vertebrates Research Institute Philippines (LAMAVE) to protect endangered marine species and their habitats in the Philippines. The online art auction will run between August 30 - September 5 2020, with 70% of each painting sold donated to LAMAVE.

The project is the brainchild of Stephanie Loy a 17-year-old, self-taught artist from Baguio, Philippines. Stephanie lives in the mountains but her heart is in the ocean. Moved by the plight of the oceans she has dedicated her talents to support the Philippines Seas and created Project Meraki, an online auction art fundraiser to raise funds for LAMAVE. Meraki, a word used by modern Greeks is used to describe doing something with soul, creativity, or love - putting “something of yourself” into what you're doing. In Stephanie’s case, it’s creating art to protect the oceans and she has created five paintings featuring key species LAMAVE works with, to be auctioned online between August 30 and September 5, 2020.

Each painting features one key species LAMAVE works with: hawksbill turtle, tiger shark, whale shark, reef manta rays and homo sapiens. Protecting marine ecosystems would be impossible without the commitment of one of the world's most formidable species: homo sapiens. Human behaviour is the root of the problem and consequently, each of us, play an essential part in solving the problem. We are species that have both the power to destroy and protect. Throughout our conservation projects, we work with both governments and communities to achieve conservation actions and we believe everyone can take individual action to protect the oceans.

You can take action today by bidding on a painting to support our research and conservation projects in the Philippines.
