RESPONDING TO STRANDED ANIMALS
Palawan
In Palawan our team has a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD) to work on a Collaborative Project to Enhance Marine Megafauna Knowledge and Conservation in Palawan and Southeast Asia by formulating strategies and activities aiming to enhance and bolster the marine wildlife conservation efforts in Palawan. This includes marine stranding and rescue and rehabilitation. Our team also work together with Puerto Princesa City Environment and Natural Resources Office (City ENRO).
PCSD HOTLINE FOR REPORTING ANIMALS IN DISTRESS: 0970-302-8554 (Smart) or (048)-433-1131 (Landline)
Other Regions
In provinces where we have a full-time research team we will respond to stranded animals were possible.
In the visayays LAMAVE collaborates with the Bohol Rescue Unit for Marine Wildlife (BRUMW) and the Cebu Marine Mammal Rescue Network (CEMARNET) to assist with strandings of marine animal in Cebu and Bohol.
STRANDING RESPONSE TRAINING
Marine animals strand for different reasons. Some of the reasons our team have encountered include:
Fatal Boat Propeller Strike
Sickness and Disease
Fibropapillomatosis a disease that affects turtles
Drowning
Fishery Interaction
Being prepared for how best to protect the animal and yourself when responding to a stranded animal is essential and can mean life or death for the animal. Stranding and rescue response is always a collaborative effort, which is why training and awareness are so important.
Unfortunately, limited access to medical equipment and dedicated facilities restrict the diagnosis and increase the challenge facing marine animals and first responders. Improving access and facilities is one of LAMAVE’s long-term goals. If you or your organization is in a position to support stranding training, rescue and/or equipment please contact our team at info[@]lamave.org
