Studying and protecting the ocean requires more than scientific knowledge. Students also need access to the right tools and opportunities to use them in real situations. However, many Filipino college students have limited hands-on experience with ocean technology because equipment can be expensive, difficult to access, and challenging to maintain locally.
All Hands on Tech: Ocean Technology Camp brings together students from the different fields of marine science, engineering, communication, and related fields. Working in interdisciplinary teams, participants assemble, test, and use accessible technologies such as PlanktoScopes and Remote Underwater Video Systems. They learn the full research process—from identifying a local marine conservation question and troubleshooting equipment to collecting, analysing, and presenting their findings.
The camp also teaches students how to explain scientific results through clear language, visuals, stories, and practical recommendations. This helps them share and discuss their findings with coastal communities and decision-makers in ways that are understandable, useful, and respectful. Ultimately, the program aims to develop young professionals who can use technology, science, and communication together to support marine conservation in the Philippines.
