FOR THE LOVE OF TURTLES

As we head into the giving season, we look to you as a ray of hope. Last year you helped raise 5000USD (~250K PHP) for LAMAVE, this year we are hoping you can do it again - this time all for the love of turtles.

Why Turtles?

Of all the species we work to protect, turtles are among the most vulnerable. They are threatened at every life stage: from the nest to the open ocean. However they are also a species that respond well to conservation actions.

INCREASING THE ODDS OF SURVIVAL

For turtle hatchlings, life begins abruptly with a mad dash to the sea, dodging, dogs, birds and other predators. Once in the ocean fish replace dogs and the struggle continues. Many turtle species will then spend years at sea, before arriving in coastal areas to continue to develop until they are sexually mature - which for some species can be 20-30 years old. This means turtles have to survive for 20+ years before they can reproduce. It is during this time when they are juvenile turtles that we frequently encounter them as victims of stranding incidents - from interactions with fishing gear to boat strikes.

Female turtles that survive long enough to reach sexual maturity must make their way back to their natal nesting grounds. Here she must find a safe space to make a nest, navigate challenges including coastal development and rising tides.

If she manage to lay a nest above the high tide line, she can only hope it is not predated by stray dogs, which remain the biggest threat. Very few nests are able to survive without protection, and so nightly patrols have become a necessity to monitor nesting beaches and relocate newly laid nests to a safe and secure hatchery.

After more than 2 months of incubation, hatchlings will emerge and make their way to the ocean, starting the cycle all over again.

HOW YOUR SUPPORT TRANSLATES INTO ACTION ON THE GROUND

Protect

Donate and protect a nest. Last season the team with local stakeholders helped secure the future of nearly 15,000 Olive Ridley hatchlings through #PawikanPatrols. Help us do the same this season and ensure eggs don’t become victims of predation.

Rescue

Support our team and partners to respond to urgent rescues of stranded and injured turtles across Palawan. This is part of our ongoing commitment to support stranding response in Palawan with the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD).

Rehabilitate

Turtles are one of the only marine species that can benefit from rehabilitation. Successful rehabilitation, particularly of mature females is essential to avoid losing opportunities for reproduction. Donations support medicine and food.

Train and Educate

We can’t do the work alone - transferring knowledge and skills to local communities and stakeholders through trainings and workshops is essential to enhance and expand conservation actions and success. Donate and up-skill communities.

Build

Hatcheries have become a needed intervention to protect turtle nests. Donate to support the construction and materials needed to build community hatcheries on nesting beaches.
