*This camp is open to Filipino college students from relevant fields such as marine biology, fisheries, environmental science, engineering, computer science, information technology, physics, design, communications, and other related disciplines. Students from interdisciplinary or non-traditional backgrounds are also welcome, provided they can show a strong interest in ocean conservation, innovation, and technology.
What is the Ocean Tech Camp?
The Ocean Tech Camp is a hands-on training program where students will learn, design, and build accessible technologies for ocean research and conservation. It brings together participants from different fields to work on real-world marine challenges using practical, accessible technology.
What is the camp about?
The camp is about making ocean technology more accessible and relevant to conservation in the Philippines. Participants will be introduced to tools, ideas, and approaches used in marine research, including low-cost sensors, imaging systems, electronics, prototyping, and creative problem-solving for ocean issues.
Who is the camp for?
The camp is for Filipino college/undergraduate students from across the Philippines who are interested in marine science, engineering, robotics, technology, design, communication, innovation, and conservation.
Do I need to be an engineer or marine biologist to apply?
No! The camp is open to students from different disciplines. We welcome applicants from fields such as marine biology, fisheries, environmental science, engineering, computer science, information technology, physics, design, communications, education, and related areas.
Yes. Eligible Filipino college / undergraduate students from anywhere in the Philippines are welcome to apply but please note that travel and accommodation are not included.
You may apply via the button above or by clicking here.
Applications are primarily for individual students. However, interdisciplinary teams will be formed during the camp, so participants will still get the chance to work closely with students from other backgrounds and skill sets.
Participants will be exposed to and may help develop low-cost ocean research and conservation tools such as cameras, sensors, monitoring devices, and other practical prototypes that can support marine fieldwork, observation, documentation, and science communication.
Participants can expect a mix of:
Talks and lectures
Hands-on workshops
Team-based problem solving
Prototype design and building
Mentorship sessions
Presentations or sharing sessions
Field exposure to understand how these technologies can be used in real-life
marine conservation and research settings
Yes! Participants will have the opportunity to go into the field and see real-life scenarios where ocean technology can be applied. This is meant to help connect the prototypes, lessons, and discussions in the camp to actual conservation and research needs on the ground.
No. The camp is designed to be highly interactive and hands-on. Learning will happen through building, collaborating, testing ideas, and engaging with real-world applications.
The camp is planned as a 7-day program.
The camp is planned to take place in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, with activities expected to be hosted across partner venues including Western Philippines University (WPU) and Palawan State University (PSU).
The camp will include learning sessions, workshops, mentorship, team activities, and field exposure. Materials and program activities during the camp will be provided by the organizers. Food will be provided during camp hours (AM Snacks, Lunch and PM Snacks).
Sadly, no. Travel and accommodation will not be covered by the organizers. Applicants should take this into consideration before applying.
Yes, but only meals during camp hours (breakfast and dinner not included)
Not necessarily. Prior experience in marine science, coding, electronics, robotics, design, or fieldwork may be helpful, but curiosity, willingness to learn, and openness to teamwork are just as important.
We are looking for students who are:
Interested in ocean conservation and innovation
Eager to learn new skills
Open to working in interdisciplinary teams
Curious, creative, and collaborative
Motivated to apply technology to real-world ocean challenges
Yes. Participants will get the chance to meet and connect with engineers from abroad as well as National Geographic Explorers from the Philippines who are working in conservation, research, and innovation. This is one of the opportunities for participants to learn from practitioners and expand their network.
This camp is a chance to:
Learn practical ocean-tech skills
Build and test ideas with other students
See how technology can be used in real conservation settings
Meet engineers and explorers working in the field
Work in interdisciplinary teams
Join a growing community interested in ocean innovation in the Philippines
Participants will receive certificates of participation upon successful completion of the program, subject to final program guidelines.
Participants will be selected based on their application, motivation, interest, and fit for the collaborative and interdisciplinary nature of the camp.
